FIFA and SOS Children's Villages has had a relationship for more than a decade. During the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ in Germany, SOS Children's Villages and FIFA teamed up to cap the two-year
6 villages for 2006 campaign. The joint fundraising endeavour raised nearly $ 28 million USD in donations for the construction and five-year maintenance of six new children's villages and ancillary social programmes, one each in Brazil, Mexico, Nigeria, South Africa, Ukraine and Vietnam.
A total of USD $ 22 million was collected in donations, while a further 3,000 people pledged their support to SOS Children's Villages as sponsors. Many of these new sponsors will make a long-term commitment to SOS Children's Villages and are expected to provide an additional $ 1.3 million per year in donations over the next five years. As such, the overall income generated by 6 villages for 2006 is expected to surpass $28 million.
FIFA lent its name and logo for such events as the FIFA World Cup Ticket Show, which raised more than $ 815,000. An autograph book including the original signatures of all 736 footballers and coaches was also donated by FIFA and the Local Organizing Committee, was auctioned for $ 82,500.
