The opening of SOS Children's Village Bhuj in the state of Gujarat represents the first project that the Indian SOS Children's Village Association was able to build using financial means raised locally. The Nürnberg-Erlangen Rotary Club in Germany, the Rotary Club in Mumbai and companies in Mumbai provided wonderful financial help.
The village is a long term solution to follow an emergency relief programme that was brought into being after the devastating earthquake in January 2001 that shook the whole province of Gujarat. At the beginning of September, 104 children and their SOS mothers were able to move out of their temporary accommodation and into the new village in the Madhapur district of Bhuj.
A medical centre and social centre are still under construction. Planned are also a school and a vocational training centre focussing on girls.
