The province Quang Binh was one of the regions that saw the most fighting during the Vietnam War and it remains one of the poorest regions in the country. The majority of the population lives of agriculture which is afflicted by severe tropical storms and floods time and time again. Low incomes, illiteracy, and a lack of health and sanitary facilities mean that everyday life is a fight for survival for many people.
Officially, there are around 1,000 orphans in the province, but that figure should in fact be much higher to include children who can no longer be cared for by their families because of economic hardship. Since there is no public money available to provide adequate care for these children, the authorities strongly welcomed the construction of an SOS Children's Village.
The village, which has twelve family houses and a kindergarten, was built with funds donated during the World Cup charity campaign 6 villages for 2006. Construction work has already been completed on all twelve houses and 60 children are now living with their SOS mothers in ten of the houses. Work is still being carried out on some buildings and small tasks, such as making green spaces and paths, are yet to be done.
