At least 20 of the 33 children brought to the SOS Children's Village in Santo in Port-au-Prince for temporary alternative care have at least one living parent. While there is not yet confirmation of how many of these children that were to be taken to the Dominican Republic have parents, guardians or family members to care for them, what is clear is that most of the children are not "orphans". More...

During a catastrophic emergency like the earthquake in Haiti pictures of injured and vulnerable children, hungry or traumatised, stir high emotions. Many people react instinctively and want to give these children what they have apparently lost: safety, love and a caring family. Tsunami - Five years on

 

Five years after the tsunami disaster, SOS Children's Villages' President Helmut Kutin sums up the situation: "We have kept our promise to help people who have been affected by this catastrophe - especially the children". The damage caused by the tsunami - at least the physical damage - is barely visible in some places. In others, there is still repair work that needs to be done. Those affected by the disaster have taken their lives into their own hands once more over the course of the last five years. Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children available as publication!

SOS Children’s Villages International and the International Social Service are pleased to launch the publication “Guidelines for the Alternative Care of Children: A United Nations framework”, with a foreword from Yanghee Lee, the Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. It includes the text of the Guidelines and sets of introductory questions reflecting on national policy.
