Two years on - Hand in hand with Haiti

On 12 January 2010, a massive earthquake struck Haiti claiming the lives of more than 230,000 people and affecting three million others. SOS Children's Villages took immediate action to relieve the suffering. Two years after the catastrophe, the reconstruction and rehabiliation work is progressing.

Significant progress has been made in reconstructing the country; nevertheless, it remains too close to a state of emergency and not close enough to the stability needed for a future that offers opportunities.

From day one, SOS Children’s Villages has helped address many diverse problems caused by the magnitude-7.0 earthquake; the epicentre of which was in the Haitian capital Port-au Prince.

The SOS Children's Villages Emergency Programme was promptly followed up in 2011 by a comprehensive rehabilitation programme that involved the construction of new schools and the provision of long-term social programmes for children and families.

Our video "Hand in Hand with Haiti's children" provides an overview of  life as it is in Haiti today.
