SOS Children's Village Stony Hill is located on a hill with abundant tropical vegetation. From the village site on the outskirts of the capital of Kingston, the children, mothers and co-workers enjoy a beautiful view of the Blue Mountains, the city and the harbour. Long before the construction of the SOS Children's Village started, there was already an old building, which was then transformed into a community house including administration and service area. It is surrounded by the 14 family houses, the house of the village director, the aunts' (family helpers') house and the SOS-Kindergarten. SOS Children's Village Stony Hill was officially inaugurated in the presence of Herrmann Gmeiner, founder of SOS-Kinderdorf International, in April 1985.
The SOS Kindergarten in Stony Hill consists of three group rooms for up to 60 children and is also open to the families of the local community. As more and more children came to the SOS Children's Village, the schools of the vicinity could not offer enough places for them any more. Therefore, an SOS Herrmann Gmeiner Primary School was set up. It went into operation in 2002. This school has six classrooms, a multi-purpose hall, a computer lab and a canteen where children can take their lunch. In general, young people move to one of the two SOS Youth Facities at 14 years approximately. They already prepare themselves for their independent life. At the same time, they continue their education or training and receive pedagogical attention from a youth supervisor living with them. The boys stay in an adapted house in the city of Kingston, while the girls are accommodated in one of the family houses at the SOS Children's Village.
