The city of Kaifeng is situated in Henan province, about 10km south of the Yellow River. Kaifeng was the capital of the Chinese Empire for seven dynasties and is considered one of the cradles of ancient Chinese civilization. In 1995, it was decided to build the sixth SOS Children's Village of China in this city. A plot of land was provided to SOS-Kinderdorf International by the authorities. The village was officially inaugurated on 7 April, 1997. It is situated in the largest residential area of Kaifeng City. There is a market, a primary and a secondary school and a hospital nearby.
SOS Children's Village Kaifeng consists of 15 family houses, the house of the village director, a house for the SOS aunts (family helpers who support the SOS mothers) and some administrative buildings. In addition, there is a room for medical treatment, an SOS Kindergarten and an SOS Youth Facility.
The kindergarten has a capacity of 180 children and is attended by both children from the SOS Children's Village and from the neighbourhood. Young people usually move from the SOS Children's Village to an SOS Youth Facility when they start vocational training or higher education. With the support of qualified youth workers, the young people develop realistic perspectives for their future, learn to shoulder responsibility and increasingly make their own decisions.
