SOS Children's Villages' activities in the country
Alain Clément, a long-standing member of the board of the French SOS Children's Village Association, was working in French Polynesia for a while in the early 1990's. During this time he was able to get a good impression of the social conditions on Tahiti, the main island of the French overseas dependency.
Because the local care facilities for orphaned and abandoned children were inadequate, the French SOS Children's Village Association decided to build an SOS Children's Village here. Thus it was that early in 1994, the local SOS Children's Village Association was founded and one year later, in October 1995, the cornerstone was laid for the first SOS Children's Village in French Polynesia. This was in Papara, on the west coast.
The first SOS Children's Village families were able to move into their new homes in 1996. The new SOS Children's Village was named after the mayor of Papara, Madame Tuianu Le Gayic, in honour of the fact that she had been very active in getting this project realised.
At present there are one SOS Children's Village and one SOS Youth Facility in French Polynesia.
