Head of Global Advocacy (f/m)

Location: International Office Brussels/Belgium

At SOS Children’s Villages advocacy is taking action to improve policies and laws that affect the well-being of children at risk of losing parental care or who have lost parental care. Based on our 70 years of experience working with these children, we influence policymakers, institutions and the society to work for political, social, economic and cultural changes that ensure those children can fully enjoy their rights, in a supportive and nurturing environment and that as adults they have equal chances as their peers to be included in society. In this context, and working in close cooperation with colleagues at the regional level and the international office in New York, the Head of Global Advocacy leads the Federation’s efforts to design and implement an advocacy strategy and activities at the international level to ensure that children without or at risk of losing parental care are priorities in international agendas.

Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Coordinating overall responsibility for the organisation’s external representation, networking and advocacy towards the UN and EU, as well as international and European NGO networks on children’s rights, child care and child development
  • Guiding the planning and implementation of the organisation’s advocacy strategy and activities on an international level, in the field of children without parental care or at greatest risk of losing it
  • Leading the Liaison & Advocacy team and the organisation’s international advocacy network
  • Advising and supporting regional partners in the development of advocacy and external co-operation
  • Participating in strategic planning, policy and organisational development
  • Reporting to the International Director of Programme and Strategy and carrying senior management responsibilities for leading a team based in Geneva, Brussels and Vienna. Coordinating advocacy planning, activities and messaging in New York
  • Advanced University degree in Political or Social Science, International Development, Human Rights, Law or first level University degree combined with considerable experience
  • A minimum of 10 years of progressive advocacy experience including at managerial level in a large child focused or social organisation i.e. international or regional level NGO with a setting in multiple countries
  • General knowledge of the UN system, EU institutions and international NGOs and experience in influencing policy-making processes
  • Knowledge of international trends, policies and programmes regarding children’s rights, development issues, sustainable development goals, civil society and NGO advocacy
  • Experience in managing the day-to day-running of an autonomous office (HR-budget-logistics)
  • Experience in coordinating international advocacy activities and campaigns, with proven track record of success
  • Experience in influencing policy making processes
  • Direct work experience with children and young people without adequate parental care in alternative care or other settings as well as experience in capacity-building for advocacy in countries outside of Europe is desirable
  • Excellent English and good French skills, German and/or Spanish is an advantage
  • Extensive leadership, strategic management and communication skills
  • EU citizenship or a valid working permit for Belgium is required
