Communications Advisor – Advocacy (f/m)

Location: International Office, Vienna/Austria or Brussels/Belgium

SOS Children’s Villages International is the umbrella organisation for the global federation of SOS Children’s Villages. As a non-governmental social development organisation we support children without parental care and families in difficult living conditions through services in care, education, health and emergency relief, and we advocate for the rights of children and young people, in alliance with a great diversity of partners. We work in 135 countries and territories, reaching over one million children, young people, families and caregivers each year.

Mission

Within the Communications & Brand Unit of SOS Children’s Villages International, the Communications Advisor cooperates with the Liaison & Advocacy team to support the attainment of the advocacy objectives of the federation.

At SOS Children's Villages, the Advocacy Team is taking action to improve policies and practices that affect the well-being of children at risk of losing parental care or who have lost parental care. It influences expert audiences such as policy-makers, institutions and civil society to bring about political, social, economic and cultural changes that ensure these children can fully enjoy their rights.

The Communications Advisor provides strategic counsel and practical communications support to help the Advocacy Team achieve these objectives. The Advisor also serves as a link with the Communications & Brand Unit to ensure appropriate communications resources are employed in campaigns and other advocacy efforts.

Tasks and responsibilities
  • Providing strategic communications counsel to Liaison & Advocacy colleagues to help them to be more effective advocates to their target audiences

  • Working with Liaison & Advocacy colleagues to develop communications plans to support specific campaigns/initiatives

  • Translating complex policy and advocacy messages for external audiences and international media outlets

  • Generating multimedia content on advocacy-related topics for external and internal platforms

  • Working with the organisation’s communications’ specialists to manage the compilation of compelling stories and images that contribute to advancing advocacy objectives

  • Monitoring, evaluating and making recommendations for the further development of communications for advocacy

  • Supporting effective communication and coordination between Liaison & Advocacy and Communications & Brand

Requirements
  • Master’s degree in journalism or communications, or an undergraduate degree with comparable experience

  • Minimum of five years working experience in journalism or communications in the area of advocacy combined with experience in public affairs, media relations or marketing communications preferably in a humanitarian context

  • Experience in developing and implementing successful communication and advocacy strategies and campaigns

  • Experience working within governmental and multilateral settings (such as the UN, EU, civil society)

  • Experience working in the field of child rights is an asset

  • Excellent English writing and editing skills combined with the ability to convey and adapt complex information to the needs of the intended audiences

  • Ability to provide strategic counsel and manage stakeholder relationships in an advisor-to-client capacity

  • Ability to work collaboratively to develop processes that enable projects to be of a high quality and delivered on time

  • Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to work collaboratively in a multicultural environment, involving people from different countries and professional backgrounds

  • Fluency in written and oral English. Knowledge of other languages is an asset.

  • Applicants must hold a valid working permit or be eligible to work within the EU
