Digital Villages empower communities across Asia through technology

Imagine a world where all children can use tablets to learn, parents can access government services online, and families can increase their income with digital skills.

The SOS Children’s Villages' Digital Villages initiative has made this vision a reality in parts of Asia. By introducing technology to underserved communities in India, Nepal, the Philippines, and Bangladesh, it has transformed lives and created new opportunities.

“For years, I dreamed of learning to use a computer, but opportunities were out of reach in our small village,” says Radha*, a mother from Koyali, India, who enrolled at an SOS Children’s Villages training center where she learned MS Paint, Word, and PowerPoint. “Today, I confidently use a computer and even teach my children. This program transformed not just my life but our entire community.”

For Neharika*, a young woman from Nepal, the initiative was a lifeline after her father’s passing. With access to an accounting course and ICT tools, she enhanced her skills and assisted others. Now excelling in her bachelor’s program, Neharika credits the initiative with reshaping her future.

Closing the digital divide

In many rural areas, lack of internet access and digital tools has left communities behind in the fast-changing world. While 96 percent of the population in Asia and the Pacific live in areas covered by mobile broadband networks, it is estimated that only one-third productively use internet services and up to 40 percent lack basic digital skills.

The Digital Villages initiative began with a mission to bridge this gap, collaborating with local leaders, schools, and governments to bring technology closer to those who need it most. By establishing digital hubs and offering training, the project has opened doors to education, income generation, and essential services. Globally, Digital Villages have been implemented in 60 countries and reach more than 40,000 people.

K Boopalan, SOS Children’s Villages’ Regional ICT Director for Asia, reflected on the initiative’s impact in Asia, saying: “Digital transformation is one of the opportunities to reach unreached children, youth, and communities, and to support them in finding new opportunities in the digital world. I am happy to see the results in the community.”

Regional transformation

India: Building digital literacy

In Pune, Maharashtra, two Common Service Centers (CSCs) were established to provide access to government programs such as Ayushman Bharat (healthcare) and E-Shram (employment schemes). The initiative trained 692 children and 4,000 caregivers, equipping them with the digital skills.

Nepal: Enhancing education

Schools in Itahari, Lumbini, and Surkhet received 127 tablets, internet services, laptops, and projectors. Over 327 participants—children, caregivers, and teachers—were trained in digital literacy and online safety. Classrooms became centers of digital learning, transforming education in rural Nepal.

Philippines: Creating ICT hubs

In Barangays Tawason and San Jose, Cebu, the project established two ICT hubs equipped with computers, printers, and internet access. These hubs served more than 150 participants, becoming vital resources for students and caregivers alike. For many, it was their first experience using digital tools.

Bangladesh: Promoting sustainability

A Community Digital Centre in Sylhet trained over 3,200 people in digital literacy, mobile banking, and eco-friendly practices. Families learned to save money, increase incomes, and embrace technology in everyday tasks.

Looking ahead

In the future, the initiative will focus on expanding to more underserved communities, introducing advanced training programs, and strengthening collaborations with governments and partners. By continuing to make technology accessible, Digital Villages aims to empower even more families and transform lives across Asia.
