Other community work in Islice
Since SOS Children's Village Islice opened its gates in 1997, the work has continued to expand. Today, SOS Children's Villages is not only caring for children in need, but is also providing invaluable support and offering hope to local families and communities through a number of facilities and programmes.
The SOS Kindergarten has also been operational since September 1997; it comprises four group rooms, a multi-purpose room, a library, a canteen and a room for medical treatment, and has a capacity for up to 80 children.
Since early 2004, the SOS Social Centre offers consultation and counselling in family planning, gynaecology and family and children's rights to vulnerable children and their families. The programme focuses on families with problems such as alcohol or domestic violence, one-parent families and under-aged mothers.
To meet the needs of the increasing numbers of youngsters an SOS Youth Facility was set up in Jelgava. Up to fifteen youngsters stay there during their vocational training or further education and their youth leaders help them prepare for an independent life.
