Humanitarian work of SOS Children‘s Villages is now CHS certified

The Core Humanitarian Standard (CHS) is a globally recognized, measurable and verifiable standard of quality and effectiveness of humanitarian assistance and development work. Non-governmental organizations and other actors use the CHS to continuously improve the way they support people and communities in emergencies such as armed conflicts or disasters.

According to the Core Humanitarian Standard and its Nine Commitments, the needs and human rights of people and communities affected by crises must always be at the center of humanitarian action.

SOS Children’s Villages, a member of the CHS Alliance, provides assistance in humanitarian crises according to the principles of humanity, neutrality, impartiality and independence. We focus on support and protection of children and young people and their rights as well as on preventing family separation.

When emergencies strike, children and young people who have lost the care of their parents face greater risks of violence, exploitation, neglect and trauma. SOS Children’s Villages cares for unaccompanied children and young people, creates child-friendly spaces and provides social and psychological support to children and families.

SOS Children’s Villages’ member associations have always felt the responsibility to serve communities affected by disasters. Since 2013, the organization has taken steps to professionalize its humanitarian assistance. Today, humanitarian projects are being implemented in 27 countries.

SOS Children’s Villages was successfully audited against the CHS by the Humanitarian Quality Assurance Initiative (HQAI). The auditors based their assessment on internal policy reviews, interviews with staff and almost 200 members of communities in which SOS Children’s Villages currently runs humanitarian projects.

The certificate, valid for three years, is an independent confirmation of the quality of SOS Children's Villages' work and our accountability to the people and communities affected by crises. CEO Ingrid Johansen says: “SOS Children’s Villages uses the Core Humanitarian Standard to continuously improve its humanitarian assistance and ensure that it is aligned with the needs of the children and families we support”.

The key findings of the CHS audit are now informing the planning of priority actions for continuous improvement of SOS Children’s Villages’ humanitarian programmes for children and families affected by conflicts and disasters worldwide.
