First day of school: learning amidst war

September 18 2025 - On the first day of school, classrooms were decorated with simple ornaments. Teachers offered sweets and juice — a rare treat for many children — as a way of easing the hunger that has become part of daily life in Gaza. “I was afraid to come to school,” said Hiba, 7. “But when I saw my teachers and friends, I felt safe. I was so happy when I got candy. I haven’t had sweets in a long time.”

May 9 2025 - As Gaza plunges deeper into humanitarian collapse, children are not only being killed in war - they are now at risk of dying from starvation. SOS Children’s Villages is gravely alarmed by the continued obstruction of humanitarian assistance and recent reports that the UN-led distribution mechanisms in Gaza may be suspended.

Care leavers support peers amid the war

April 1 2025 - The Children’s Villages Graduate Association Palestine, a network of over 350 young people who grew up in care at SOS Children’s Villages in Gaza and the West Bank, continues to work with fellow care leavers as they navigate economic instability, social isolation, and mental health struggles, all which have worsened in the ongoing conflict.

After three years of war, more foster families needed in Ukraine

February 21 2025 - since the start of the full-scale invasion on 24 February 2022, placing children without parental care in foster care has been an urgent priority for both the government of Ukraine and NGOs such as SOS Children's Villages. However, more foster families are needed to meet the growing need.
