Children are at risk of poverty
Child poverty
Unable to afford quality food: More than 26% of the population, almost 500,000 people, are at risk of living in poverty The Zemgale region experiences a slightly greater risk.
Many families are unable to afford certain expenses, with 23% of households unable to afford a protein-rich meal every other day and less than 40% of people consuming fruit and vegetables each day.
An inability to follow a healthy diet affects child’s health now and in the future. It makes them vulnerable to illness and disease that limits their quality of life.

Children live in overcrowded spaces
Poor living conditions
Many children in Latvia live in overcrowded spaces, with more than 50% sharing a room with adults or more than one other child.
Many households are unable to adequately heat their homes (16%), have no flushing indoor toilet (22%), or experience damp, leaks, or rot (30%).
Growing up in a cold home and poor conditions affects a child’s physical and mental health, often leaving them without an appropriate place to do homework or a comfortable space for themselves.

How your support helps in Bauska
Caring for children who cannot live with their families
Some children cannot stay with their families, even with additional support. When this happens, they can find a new home in SOS Children’s Villages. Many children grow up in foster families. Wherever possible, we work closely with the children’s family of origin. If children can return to live with their families, we help them adapt to this change.
Supporting young people to become independent
To help young people become confident and independent, our local team works closely with each young person to develop a plan for their future. We support young people and also help them prepare for the labour market and increase their employment prospects. For example, young people can attend workshops and trainings run by SOS Children’s Villages. They also improve their skills through taking part in different projects with local mentors and businesses.
